Two Most Common Home Damages Caused by Winter Weather

Some types of home damage are unavoidable during Akron winters. But do not fret, today we will talk about the two most common cold weather problems and how you can prevent them.
We’ll start by discussing frozen pipes. These are a common issue, but we have several ideas for prevention. If the forecast is projected to drop below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, try some of the ideas below.

  • Don’t turn off your furnace. A warm home equals warm pipes. Saving a few dollars from lower heat will not be worth it when a pipe bursts.
  • Keep your water moving and prevent freezing by letting your faucets drip during extreme cold temperatures.
  • If you have have a frozen pipe, the first step you should do is turn off the main water valve and call a plumber.

The second addition on our list is ice dams, when water builds up behind large areas of ice on your roof.

  • Make sure your attic is insulated. Ample insulation will keep warm air out of the attic preventing snow from melting.
  • Improve ventilation. The key is to keep your attic cool. Ventilation such as an eave, soffit, ridge or gable will allow cold air in.
  • Call Paul Davis Restoration of Akron Ohio ASAP if an ice dam does appear on your roof.
